Welcome to the Naija Bitcoin Hackathon: Pioneering Bitcoin and Lightning Network Innovation! Prepare for an exhilarating 3 months hackathon dedicated to building on Bitcoin Lightning Network(a layer 2 technology on bitcoin). From the 1st of September to 30th of November, 2025, join a passionate community of developers, entrepreneurs and enthusiasts to explore new possibilities with Bitcoin L2 technology.

Objectives

  • Showcase Bitcoin's Potential in Nigeria: Participants will present projects to government officials, academic institutions, tech companies, and the broader Bitcoin community.
  • Skill-Building and Learning: Gain practical, hands-on experience with Bitcoin Core and Lightning Network while working in teams.
  • Building Connections: Network with developers, mentors, and industry leaders passionate about Bitcoin technology.

Track 1: Building with Bitcoin Core and Lightning Network

Develop solutions that leverage Bitcoin Core and Lightning Network for real-world applications. Participants are encouraged to think creatively and use Bitcoin technology to address key needs. Suggested focus areas include:
  • Payment Solutions and Micropayments
  • Privacy and Security Enhancements
  • Tokenization of RWA on Bitcoin/Lightning
  • Decentralized Finance (DeFi) with Bitcoin
  • Bitcoin Custody and Wallet Solutions

Eligibility Criteria

To ensure fairness, all participants must follow these guidelines:
  • No Early Coding: Coding begins only at the hackathon's official start date
  • Originality: Projects must be unique and not previously submitted to other hackathons.
  • Documentation: Include a README and detailed documentation explaining technical aspects.
  • Submission: Submit projects on the Naija Bitcoin Hackathon Telegram and Aya platform to receive a commemorative

Judging Criteria

Projects are evaluated on a scale of 1 to 5 points, with a maximum score of 30 points based on:
  • Innovation and Problem Solving: Creativity and relevance to real-world challenges.
  • Technical Proficiency: Effective use of Bitcoin Core or Lightning Network.
  • User Experience and Design: Usability and design considerations.
  • Market Potential and Impact: Adoption potential and community impact.
  • Presentation and Communication: Clarity in conveying the project’s value
  • Originality: Unique features or novel approaches.

Deliverables

To qualify for bounties, teams must:
  • Submit a GitHub demo, using Vercel or Screencast to demonstrate functionality.
  • Share progress updates about your team’s journey, including key learnings, insights, and future ideas, within 1,000 characters.

Top Prizes Pool: Up to $3000 !:

  • 1st Place : $1500
  • 2nd place: $1000
  • 3rd place : $500

Who Should Join?

This hackathon is open to seasoned Bitcoin developers, university students, and all developers passionate about Bitcoin and Lightning Network. Beginners are welcome and will be paired with experienced mentors for a collaborative learning experience.
