The Power of Showing Up: Why Volunteering Matters More Than You Think

I spent the Day of Love with many people at once…

No, no, it’s probably not what you think.
I mean I attended an event on Valentine’s Day. And not just any event, a Bitcoin event! ✨ (In case you don’t know, I’m a Bitcoin girlie.) The “Where Love Meets Bitcoin” event took place on Saturday, and I must say, it’s one of my favourite memories of 2026 so far.

It was an event organized to teach people about Bitcoin, or as our host loves to call it, Freedom Money. I didn’t just attend as a guest, I was a volunteer! I volunteered as an usher. As an introvert, I usually prefer to stay in the background in public spaces. Stepping into a visible role, welcoming people, and engaging with attendees initially felt intimidating, but things changed quickly.

I discovered a whole new part of myself – the social, receptive part that loved being around like-minded people. And aside from ushering, I proudly represented my community, the Nigerian Women Bitcoiners. It was so lovely meeting up with a few of our members. With guidance from my community manager, I began approaching women at the event to collect their contacts for our community.

I was nervous initially, then focused… and before I knew it, I was genuinely excited. It was a new experience, the conversations were warm, and the ladies were incredibly kind. I’m grateful for the experience, the people I met, and the opportunity to learn more about Bitcoin. And I’m proud of myself for showing up, trying something new, and not retreating when it felt unfamiliar.

Volunteering might seem like a small role from the outside, but it places you at the heart of something meaningful. It gives you responsibility. It stretches you. It introduces you to people you may never have spoken to otherwise.

For me, it was more than ushering guests. It was stepping forward instead of shrinking back. If you’ve ever considered volunteering wherever you are, this might be your sign. Growth rarely begins with confidence. Sometimes it begins with simply saying yes. Have you ever stepped out of your comfort zone and surprised yourself? Tell me about it below.
